The many causes of groin injuries

Brad Brown: You’re listening to the Ask Coach Parry podcast and another wonderful question in today and it’s from Aleena. Lindsey, Aleena wants to know, what causes groin injuries and is it okay to run if you have a groin injury. If not, what sort of exercise or strengthening can you do to help speed up the process, but also to prevent it from happening again?

Lindsey Parry: Sure, so the causes of groin injuries are many. There could be tightness or weakness in the groin itself, which obviously then predisposes you to that injury. Tightness in the hamstrings can cause a pelvic tilt, which then will go and put pressure on your hip flexes and your adductors or your groin muscles.

Weakness in your glutes can cause a collapsing in your running stride which also, so really what I’m saying is that the actual cause of what’s hurting the groin can be quite large. Jumping over or over striding and landing awkwardly, that can cause issues. There’s a lot of reasons why your groin can be sore.

You shouldn’t really train through pain

We shouldn’t really train through any pain, to be completely honest. But what I do is I divide these things up into how sore is it while you are running. Does it compromise your actual running stride? Does it get progressively worse while you are running? If the answer to all three of those questions is yes, then you need to get it treated before you continue on with your training.

Groins are troublesome and they’re troublesome because of, as I’ve said, the cause of them can be quite complicated. So you do need to get to a physiotherapist, you do need to get it checked out and if you do have weak glutes or a pelvic tilt or possibly even some pelvic rotation that’s causing the added stress into the groin. That’s going to have to be taken care of to prevent the groin from getting sore again.
