Fast Friday – Overcoming injury

Fast Friday – Overcoming injury

This week’s Fast Friday is all about Scott Craig-Mackie who has been a member of the Coach Parry Training Club since October 2018.

The plan…

When Scott came to us he had been struggling with a stress fracture in his tibia and needed help figuring out how to continue training safely with the injury. Doing the full Ironman in Port Elizabeth was his main race for the year, so even though he had suffered a stress fracture in October, he still had a lot of time to recover as well as train hard for the race.

We adjusted the training schedule to fit his needs and accommodate his injury so that he could achieve his goal and finish the Ironman in April.

A bad turn…

Unfortunately, with sport, not everything goes according to plan…

Scott had been building the run with a slow process since November and things had been looking good for him to be back on track, but then bad luck struck again.

In the middle of January, his leg started to hurt again, which meant that we had to drop down the intensity, as well as the volume, of his training. So at this point, Ironman was still possible, but it was going to be tough for Scott.

Hard work pays off!

Before race day, the longest run that Scott had done was a 9km in July 2018. Surprisingly, he had a faster time on race day than the previous year despite his very limited running in the build-up.

Scott’s story shows that with hard work, dedication and the right guidance you will be able to achieve your goals no matter what obstacles stand in your way!

Congratulations again Scott!
