Training for Comrades Marathon training after a glute injury
Welcome to Ask Coach Parry. The question today comes from Lindsey Evart. Lindsey says: “ My pre-Comrades Marathon training was interrupted in December because of a glute tear and calcification in the glute.
Post 6 weeks rest and rehab, hopefully I can start a walking/running programme in 2 weeks. How do I get back onto the Comrades Marathon bus? I am a regular marathon and ultra runner and a Bronze Comrades Marathon finisher.”

Brad Brown: Welcome to Ask Coach Parry. The question today comes from Lindsey Evart. Lindsey says: “ My pre-Comrades Marathon training was interrupted in December because of a glute tear and calcification in the glute.

Where to start
Lindsey Parry: As soon as you are capable of sitting on a bike and doing some stationary cycling do that so that we can take care of your cardio vascular fitness.
You do have a strong base of running so you will be able to build up much quicker than if you were a novice with the same injury. You just have to guard against building up too quickly.
Use your experience, build yourself up really slowly over time. You might even want to skip doing a marathon qualifier and use a 50km as your qualifier and double it up as one of your two long training runs that you are going to have.
So you will do that as you are nearing the closing of the qualifying period. That way you also don’t have to rush to try and get a qualifier now, which is probably the thing that will cause you to build up too quickly and risk re-injury.
