When injury affects your Comrades Marathon training.

When injury affects your Comrades Marathon training.

This is Ask Coach Parry, and once again we have a question to answer about a glute injury affecting Comrades Marathon training.

Jonathan sent his question in, and he says he has been running for a few years, he has run about 12 marathons and five Two Oceans ultra's.

He tore is gluteas maximus at bay-to-bay but still finished in 3.30. He kept training but has discomfort on all his long runs. He had to bail at the peninsula marathon at 30km's.

The last qualifier is Kango. Please can you advise, should he give up training for the Comrades Marathon or should he train through the pain?

What are you training for?

What should be done?

Lindsey: Well, he shouldn't give up training for the Comrades Marathon - nor should he train through the pain. I think if he had taken a break much sooner and looked after the injury he wouldn't be in this problem at all.

He'd be easily be able to go and use Kango as his qualifier for Two Oceans in particular. But for the Comrades Marathon, there are heaps of qualifiers still coming up. But if Two Oceans is one of the things he wants to do this year then I suppose he has to try and get himself ready for Kango.

But he can do that by doing cross training such as cycling or spinning classes. Or any cardio vascular exercise that doesn't cause pain to his glute. Get some physio, let that glute heal so that he can have a chance of qualifying at Kango.

If he is happy to let Two Oceans go this year, then he can rest and let that thing heal properly. Again I would go for physio so that it is not too long. As long as he is up and running and training again reasonably by March, he still has opportunities well into April to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.

There is certainly no need to give up hope, but it is time now to be a little bit more sensible about the injury and not keep training through it.
