Which running shoes give you the most mileage?

Lindsey Parry: Being in the Asics Cumulus and not having any injury problems, I think it is safe to say he is fine in a neutral running shoe so we don’t really want to go too far into the realm of stability and particularly not motion-control.  In the Asics range, a shoe like the Nimbus may last him a little longer -something like New Balance maybe the 1080, but really a high mileage neutral trainer. And unfortunately given his height and weight he is probably looking at round about 600km’s before he needs to replace a pair of running shoes anyway. I would stick to the high mileage neutral; maybe try a couple of brands.

I always say to people: if you’re not getting injuries your already one step ahead. So even though he’s getting through those Cumulus quite quickly, I wouldn’t make any changes now leading into Comrades, but perhaps after Comrades experiment with a couple of different brands. But you know Asics are fairly hardy shoes so I think he’s going to find it difficult to find a pair of running shoes that lasts him longer than 500/600k’s.

Brad Brown: Just a follow-on question, you talk about experimenting after Comrades, what’s the best way to go about that?

Lindsey Parry: Well, I would get into a running store. One of the VERY important things about a running shoe is that it must be comfortable. So he will find that because he is comfortable in a pair of Asics, he’s probably going to be comfortable in a pair of New Balance and probably also maybe Saucony or Brookes (can’t remember which one is the broader of the two) but that he won’t necessarily be too comfortable in a pair of Nikes or Adidas as they tend to be more narrow. But he needs to get to the shop, get a full range of high mileage running shoes in front of him, put them on and run 300/400 meters in each shoe and get a real feel for what shoe is most comfortable on his feet. And when he gets that answer, he can try one of the brands that feels quite similar -in terms of comfort and fit- to his Asics and give them a whirl and hopefully he gets more than 300k’s in those pair of running shoes.
