She has never done a race before and she is interested in doing a half marathon in 2015. Is now the right sort of time, the beginning of September, to start a beginners training programme and how should she go about it in order to build up slowly?

Lindsey Parry: Now is a great time to start running. The reality is the more time you give yourself the better. If she is running at the moment to stay fit and wants to upscale that to a half marathon that is a bit easier. The use of the word beginner I’m going to assume she is a novice and she hasn’t run much.

She will want to spend at least 12 to 16 weeks really building up painstakingly slowly. In other words doing more walking than running. I would look at something along the lines of a 20 minute run which would comprise of 4 minutes of walking, 1 minute of running and you just repeat that 4 times to take you up to 20 minutes.  You’d then repeat that 3 or 4 times in the week and then every week you would decrease the walking by a minute and increase the jogging by a minute.
